Letter from SE International

Board Chair Rebecca Stahl | April 2021

“My hope is that we as the global SE community can both normalize these intense fight/flight responses as we come out of freeze and help ourselves and those around us find even 1% more space in how we respond. My hope is that we can use this knowledge we understand and know so well to look at each other and the world with more grace – toward ourselves, and each other, for these normal survival responses to a very abnormal situation.”

“The world is different these days.
So are we.”

We’re different in how we listen and respond. We’re training online and offering new professional development programs. And we’re taking new steps to invest in SE. We’re holding regular Town Halls, funding BIPOC scholarships, helping crisis responders internationally, reaching out to the media on our SE programs, having Community Conversations on important mental health topics, and funding important research on SE. In our last issue of SE Today, our Board shared their thoughts on our new name, identity, and focus. In our next issue, we’ll share more from key stakeholders of SE in a video. If you didn’t get a chance to read the Board letter, see the link below. We also encourage you to read our 2020 Organizational Report, which details many of the actions and events that led us to the “new” SE International.

In Service to SEI:

Special Announcement to Come for 2021 SEI Board Position Search

Later this week, the SE International (SEI) Board of Directors will be issuing its annual Call for Applications to seek candidates for SEI board service.

Two board member positions will become available on July 1, 2021, with terms for Immediate Past Chair Michael Changaris, PsyD, and Director Monica Simionato expiring.   Both Michael and Monica will have completed seven years of service and dedication to SEI.    Terms of service for a SEI board position are three years.   Upon completion, an additional three-year term is possible.

With the recent change in name and brand, the SE International Board is expanding and growing its focus to develop greater representation from the international community at large.   In addition, the Board is seeking expertise in advocacy, DEI, marketing, public relations, fundraising and mental health/medical policy expertise among the skill sets to broaden the board’s capabilities as a governing body.

Please look for a more detailed special announcement to come from SEI later this week.

“Greetings From Japan”

SE International now has its first Faculty Track candidate in Japan: Theresa Hanaoka, SEP, of Yokohama, Japan, has just started co-teaching with and being mentored by Dave Berger, SEP, as part of her Faculty development plan. Theresa is a long-time organizer and assistant for SE training in Japan and Asia.

Theresa Hanaoka, SEP

She has a Ph.D., MA in Anthropology, MA in Health Psychology, and is a JLP (Japanese Licensed Psychologist), and JLAHP (Japanese Association of Health Psychology Licensed Advanced Health Psychologist).

“When I started my SE training, I realized that SE would be one of the most needed trauma resolution modalities in Japan, which unfortunately has a unique transgenerational trauma. Being a SE faculty member – and teaching in my native tongue of Japanese – was my goal after I became a Beginning Level Small Group Case Consultation provider. I am very excited about delivering SE training in Japanese and am indebted to the experienced SE Faculty members who came to Japan and taught SE during the past 12 years.”

One Million Masks

The old saying “many hands make light work” was put to the test on Saturday, April 10, as SEI joined seven other sponsors at Empower Field at Mile High to give away one million masks to Denver small businesses and organizations such as homeless shelters, schools, children’s groups, and elder care facilities. The event was hosted by our partner Therapy Aid Coalition (TAC) and Frontliners Med, a frontline-owned global PPE company. The SEI “hands on deck” were Marv Tuttle, Krysti Giese, Daniela Pineda Soraca, Jennifer Payette, and Kathy Hally.

SE Community Conversations

Medical Professionals: Mental Health Matters

Our most recent Community Conversation was on April 9 and focused on mental health for medical professionals. Thank you to all our great panelists – and to those of you who joined from around the world! We are honored to be in these global conversations, exploring more ways that neurobiology can be a powerful resource to deal with the crisis context that has been with us since the start of the pandemic. We will continue these conversational gatherings with you, exploring the wide variety of ways people can be supported to resolve trauma and become more resilient. Our next Community Conversation will be Friday, May 14, at 12pmMT and will focus on how neuropsychology benefits addictions and recovery work.

To watch the replay of the most recent Conversation, go to the link below.

In the next SE Today, we’ll feature some of the discussion from the April Conversation.

If you would like to participate in future public health-based webinars as a speaker, please sign up for our speaker roster so we can learn more about you. If you would like someone connected with SEI to speak to your group or organization, we are happy to facilitate those introductions. We are proud of the great work our SE practitioners and students are doing! And, if you feel inclined, please donate to help keep programs like our Community Conversations going.

Closing Thoughts:

A Picture is Worth a Thousand  Words

This photo went viral on social media recently. The idea was from a doctor in Brazil treating COVID-19 patients – he filled two disposable gloves with hot water, tied them together, and placed them around the hands of a patient to simulate physical contact. Thank you, Somatic Experiencing Romania, for sharing this on our Facebook page and thank you to all the frontline healthcare workers around the world who are going above and beyond.
