“The world is different these days.
So are we.”

Our website has a brand new look and is going live today! It now presents the next stage in our rebranding process. But more than just new and good-looking outer clothing, the website has a stronger user interface, improved organization of content, and is much easier to navigate. Have you been searching for a “search” function? We now have that. There is much more functional improvement to sections of the website coming over the next several months. The rebranding and new website is the cumulative, and intense, effort during the last six months of a team of dedicated people. We hope you will find it enjoyable and helpful to you. Stay tuned for more.

New SEI Training Director: Update

We hope to have a new Director of Training and Faculty Relations on board by June. More than 150 applications were received and screening interviews have brought that to four finalists, who are being interviewed by an 11-person team comprised of global faculty, coordinators, training assistants, board and staff. Finalists were asked to present 30-, 60- and 90-day startup plans to the interview team, in addition to answering general questions on a variety of topics focused on the new SEI position. Look forward to an introduction to our new Director in June.

Help For India

Tragically for the SE International Community, the current Covid-19 situation in India hits home. We lost one of our beloved Indian students to Covid-19, Lovepreen Kaur. Devastating news for us. We have compiled a list of ways you can help. If you are aware of additional resources, please reach out.

In Their Own Words:

The first Peter Levine Research Award Winners

SEI recently talked with the winners of the first award winners: Didem Caylak, and her all-volunteer team using SE to help medical professionals in Turkey during COVID-19, and Dr. Madeleine Lowman, who developed a screening tool for mental health counselors to determine the type of trauma response a client is experiencing. Read some of their comments below and look for the video interviews with them in the next issue.

Professional Research Award:

Didem Caylak and volunteer team, Turkey

“We’re a trauma country, a developing country, and we don’t have a lot of resources. This is all volunteers. All our research is like that . . . we’re happy we’re able to contribute. Now the team is thinking: What is next for us with research? This award brings a lot of motivation, pride, and joy to our community.”
Didem Caylak

Student Research Award:

Dr. Madeleine Lowman, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro

“Curiosity is what motivated me. I was a little frustrated because we have a lot of conceptual information, but I thought there must be a way to track autonomic regulation and use it as an intervention so that clients can spend less time in therapy and more time building their lives.”
Dr. Madeleine Lowman

Virtual International Conference 2021:

Virtual International Conference 2021: New Dates Announced
To ensure that we can deliver the best conference experience and a high level of participation we are moving the dates of our virtual conference from June 11-13, 2021 to October 22-24, 2021.

Our goal with this conference continues to be to provide an opportunity to bring our community together after a long year of upheaval. Community connection has been so important to us over the past year, and we look forward to this as not only a celebration of Dr. Peter Levine and his life’s work but also to celebrate you, our SE community, and your successes.  We received so many wonderful presentation proposals from our Call for Abstracts, clearly this community has kept busy! We look forward to rolling out the agenda and a full list of presenters very soon.

SE™ Community Conversation:

Substance Abuse, Addiction Recovery, and Frontiers in Neuropsychology

Please join us for our next Community Conversation:
May 14, 12pm – 1:30pm MT.

Advances in neuroscience are rapidly affecting how we understand addiction – how it affects the brain, the body, and the nervous system. Recent advances in brain science and body-based therapies have transformed approaches to healing trauma in the nervous system and methods of crisis stabilization. They are making an impact in traditional approaches to dealing with substance abuse and addiction recovery. In this gathering, therapists and professionals from recovery facilities and one-on-one support programs will explore successful interventions and new frontiers in addiction recovery. In every SE Community Conversation series, you can count on some lively discussion, some tips and tools, and some group exercises. Our most recent Community Conversation – Medical Professionals: Mental Health Matters – is available on our website for replay. Thank you to all our great panelists – and to those of you who joined from around the world! We are honored to be in these global conversations, exploring more ways that neurobiology can be a powerful resource to deal with the crisis context that has been with us since the start of the pandemic.
