Secure Phylogenetic Attachment – A Study With Twins

Applications of SE
Date: September 1, 2022 | 3:00 PM-4:30 PM MT
Presenter: Joseph Riordan, MAPS, FCCLP, IAAN, SEP
Location: Online Webinar
Details

Trauma is transposed in the interpersonal neurobiological social dynamics of attachment and may be contagious throughout the life cycle. Trauma and social isolation may be responsible for the alarming widespread changes in human attachment dynamics. Attachment theory may be experiencing a paradigm shift to include the impact of trauma on attachment relationships.

Redefining "Secure Attachment" to accommodate the dramatic changes in human relationships due to trauma has led to the concept of Secure Phylogenetic Attachment. Resolving trauma with Somatic Experiencing and Attachment Focused-Somatic Experiencing invites the hypothesis that, Secure Phylogenetic Attachment is the antithesis of trauma.

AF-SE may be applied to resolve dyadic trauma and restore secure phylogenetic attachment throughout the life cycle.
Phylogenetics refers to the evolutionary history of relationships between individuals in a species for survival. Human relationships are facing challenges that threaten Secure Attachment and promote social isolation that may have a catastrophic impact on the social evolution of the human species.

This twin study explores monozygotic attachment and offers quantifiable evidence of recovery from trauma with SE and AF-SE utilizing smartphone technology to measure autonomic, somatic variables of change including, Heart Rate Variablitiy, Heart Rate, and Sleep Disturbance.

Basic Principles of Somatic Experiencing for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous & People of Color)

Date: September 10 - 11, 2022 | 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM CT
Presenter: Jeanna Gomez, LCSW, LADAC, CPC, SEP, BASE-P, SEP
Location: Online Workshop
Details

Honoring our commitment to serving the needs of those who have, to date, been under-represented in the SE community, Somatic Experiencing International is launching its first BIPOC (Indigenous, Black and otherwise identified People of Color) cohorts.

While representing a wide range of cultures and experiences, this cohort will provide the opportunity to learn SE to an international audience of practitioners dedicated to supporting their marginalized communities in healing from the damaging effects of trauma. Students will be able to learn the SE skills and framework within the safe environment of a BIPOC training team and participants and explore how the skills are applicable to their communities.

We will be covering the standard SE curriculum while recognizing how issues of racism and historical oppression impact our experiences of traumatic events. We will also explore how culture and connection to culture helps to heal trauma.

Community Forum

Date: September 14, 2022 | 11am - 1pm Mountain
Location: Online Event
Details

This forum will be held online via Zoom.

As a modality, Somatic Experiencing is about meeting everyone’s nervous system where it is and working with what arises. This requires that we all understand the diversity of nervous systems and experiences. This Community Forum is an opportunity for anyone within the community to share experiences that have worked and those that have not worked as well within the Somatic Experiencing International experience, particularly around issues related to disability and accessibility.

Accessibility can mean so many things to so many people. It is defined by law quite explicitly in the United States and in other countries. But accessibility cannot begin and end with what is legally required. For us at SEI, it can include how we talk about how we all have unique bodies and nervous systems that respond to the world in different ways. It can mean having different options for training and completion requirements. But most importantly, it means understanding that unique needs exist and creating options for training that attempt to meet those needs.

This Community Forum is an opportunity for folks to share and listen and to offer feedback on what has worked and what has not. We also know that not everyone will be available at a specific time, so if you would like to specifically offer feedback about accessibility issues (or anything), you can always email us. We can also set up one-on-one calls with staff, board, or faculty members who can bring issues back to the larger organization. We want everyone to have the opportunity to be heard in a meaningful and positive way.

We also recognize that there can be a sense that stepping forward can result in retaliation of some variety. While we cannot promise that every change requested will be made or will be made immediately, we can promise that no one will be treated differently because they speak up. Our ethics document is clear that retaliation is not allowed, and we all hold that deeply in our hearts as a core value. These issues are important, and we only get better when we listen to each other and grow together.

If you are available, please join us on September 14 to share your thoughts or to listen as others share theirs. If you would like to provide feedback by email or in a smaller conversation, please reach out to us.

Empathic Intelligence

Explorations of SE
Date: September 15, 2022 | 10:00 AM-11:30 AM MT
Presenter: Kelley Oswin, RSW
Location: Online Webinar
Details

"Empathy is the experience of resonance we identify somatically, affectively or cognitively with another" - Reverend Roshi Joan Halifax, PhDEmpathic Intelligence requires a level of mental and emotional agility to understand and differentiate self-states from the states of others. It is at its very essence the "pursuit of Knowing" while also highlighting our own blind spots. The unconscious use of empathy and empathic abilities can create challenges for those in helping professions that are completely outside of our awareness. Here we will explore how to enhance sustainable caring through conscious empathy, energetics, and self-regulation practices.

The Relationship Between Caffeine & Trauma Healing

Applications of SE
Date: September 20, 2022 | 11:00 AM-1:00 PM MT
Presenter: Luis Mojica CLC, CNC, SEP
Location: Online Webinar
Details

This webinar will teach SEPs and self-helpers the relationship between caffeine and our adrenals/nervous systems. Many people will spend decades in therapy for anxiety, insomnia, and other symptoms of PTSD without ever addressing caffeine consumption.

Caffeine stimulates adrenaline which literally turns on fight/flight response. I’ll be discussing the nuances of how we can better understand this through the lens of trauma.

How caffeine is used to mobilize through freeze response. How being in fight/flight from caffeine can allow us to get things done and create a sense of aliveness and safety that we don’t feel when we’re vulnerable.

We’ll also discuss how long-term, habitual use of caffeine is exhausting to the adrenals and counter-productive in healing stress & trauma.

Part IIII: October 6, 2022 - 11:00AM - 12:30PM

Dynamic Somatic Touch (DST) is a new Trauma and life approach model developed to greatly accelerate the work of trauma resolution and the unwinding of body-based dysfunctional patterns. It is a melding of Orthobionomy, Somatic Experiencing, Osteopathy, Narrative, and Depth Psychology as well as several western and eastern philosophies.

DST views the individual in their wholeness: emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual. Working within these horizons, individuals not only achieve health and resolution, but also life mastery that extends resilience, health, and an expanded experience of being alive.

Applying the outstanding strengths of several disciplines, DST encourages, supports, and makes possible the unwinding of long held bodily limitations, nervous system activation, and unhelpful belief systems. Using touch, narrative, and empathetic presence, students will learn how to help resolve difficult emotional, bodily, and mental experiences.

DST can be applied in any discipline, from bodyworkers, yoga instructors, herbalists to therapists and medical professionals.
