Lifting Heavy Things: Using Strength Training To Support Trauma Healing: Part I

Date: June 17, 2021 | 11am - 12pm Mountain
Presenter: Laura Khoudari, CPT, CES, SEP-in-Training
Location: Online Webinar
Details

As current and future Somatic Experiencing® Practitioners we understand that the mind and body are connected and we want to help our clients more fully heal from trauma than they can from simply coming to a place of awareness and understanding. We want to help them contend with the physiological responses to their thoughts and feelings. One way we do this is by helping them practice embodied awareness. While most people think of yoga, qigong, or Alexander Technique when they think about using an embodied movement practice to help cultivate embodied awareness, the truth is we can turn any movement practice into embodied movement practice— even strength training.

Strength training—lifting weights, using weight machines, and training with resistance bands— benefits your heart, muscles, bones, posture, and balance. It makes you a more efficient mover and can eliminate certain types of chronic pain. It improves your mood and promotes better sleep. On top of all of these benefits, the experience of getting physically stronger over time builds feelings of self-confidence and self-efficacy, which is very empowering. When combined with principles of SE It can also be approached in a way that cultivates a sense of safety within one’s own body, as well as help survivors identify what they need to feel safe in their environment and relationships.

While trauma informed yoga is popular and somewhat easy to find, no modality works for everybody all of the time, even yoga. Many trauma survivors find yoga (even the trauma-informed kind) quite triggering. Strength training is a different way to practice greater embodied awareness for people healing from trauma.

This is this first of a three-part series based on the book Lifting Heavy Things: Healing Trauma One Rep at a Time.

In the first workshop, Lifting Heavy Things: Conditions, we will look how trauma affects your ability to workout, not just in terms of feeling safe but what’s going on physiologically when someone with trauma takes on a typical fitness program. We will discuss why without a trauma informed lens clients are more prone to injury, excessive fatigue, and exacerbated trauma symptoms. I will then give you practical tools to help your clients put the conditions in place to create a more trauma informed workout.

Learning Objectives Part 1
In this workshop, attendees will learn:
* How trauma can affect a client’s workout.
* How clients a trauma informed approach to strength training can support a client’s healing work.
* Practical tools to put conditions in place to create a trauma informed workout.

A SE™ Research Salon: Can We Create a Manual for the Somatic Experiencing® Modality for Research Purposes?

Date: June 18, 2021 | 10am - 11:30am Mountain
Presenter: Frank Olsen, SEP, EASE/Denmark Research Committees
Location: Online Webinar
Details

There is an urgent need to place the Somatic Experiencing approach for the treatment of trauma as an evidence-based method /modality. For this purpose, we need to come to terms with a common description of the SE interventions used to be able to replicate research studies on the effectiveness of SE for the treatment of trauma in the future. This webinar presents a possible solution for a protocol, loyal to Somatic Experiencing as a treatment modality opposed to a fixed stepwise method, followed by a discussion. Do not miss this opportunity to improve this work with your valued reflections and feedback!

SE™ and Spiritual Practice: Reclaiming the Freedom to Grieve

SE & Spiritual Practice series: Part IV
Date: July 16, 2021 | 10am - 6pm Eastern
Presenter: Dr. Glyndie Nickerson, MA, SEP, PhD
Location: Online Workshop
Details

Grief is a deeply spiritual condition and process. Many of us have experienced the loss of family members and friends, especially over the past year. At the same time as our own loss, we are also holding space for loved ones and clients who are often grieving too. We will explore the questions: How do we create the conditions to allow the heart’s grieving process to transform us? And how do we hold space for our clients' grief?

In this workshop we will learn about:
~ How the process of grief takes place in cycles that have their own mysterious timing.
~ How SE tools can assist us in:
~ Setting up initial conditions for the organic process of these cycles.
~ Recognizing and holding space for the sympathetic, dorsal and ventral phases of the grieving process.
~ How the experiential process of SE can support the organic phases to unfold without judgment of what grief “should” feel like or look like.
~ How our own embodied grief work, when titrated, can create an expanded capacity for presence, a space from which to authentically & powerfully support others dealing with loss.

~ This is a dynamic workshop where we ask questions and collectively explore together. We will work in dyads, small groups and in dialogue with the entire class.
~ Through a contemplative lens, this workshop is open to people of all spiritual/meditative practices, religions and traditions.
~ Your felt spiritual support through your unique experience is welcome (Creator, Ancestors, God, Nature, stillness, felt community, emptiness, etc.)
~ Prerequisite: at least SE Beginning I

SE™ & The Refugee Experience: Supporting Nervous Systems Impacted By The Trauma Of Forced Migration

Anti-Oppression Webinar series
Date: August 5, 2021 | 11am - 1pm Mountain
Presenter: Mahshid Hager, LMFT, SEP
Additional Presenter: Brenton Diaz, BSW, BA, RSW, MSW
Location: Online Webinar
Details

In the past decade, the global refugee population has more than doubled. There are currently an estimated 80 million people who are displaced from their home countries. 30-34 million of them are children below the age of 18. The forced migration of people across the world has created unique experiences of trauma for various people from different countries and cultures. In this webinar, we will clarify key concepts, introduce some of the unique presentations of trauma that these groups experience, and explore ways Somatic Experiencing is being used to address these experiences. This webinar will explore the inherent challenges of working with this population and offer therapeutic interventions proven effective. Special attention will be offered in terms of working across culture, cultural specific understandings of trauma (a.k.a. ‘Idioms of Distress’), and how Somatic Experiencing can be conceptualized for these communities.

Free to attend
We strongly encourage a donation to support our BIPOC scholarship fund (Tier 1: 0$, Tier 2: $10, Tier 3: $25, Tier 4: $75, Tier 5: $100). However, no one will be turned away from this webinar for not making a financial contribution.

Basic Principles of Somatic Experiencing® for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous & People of Color)

Date: September 18 - 19, 2021 | 10am - 4pm Central time
Presenter: Francine Kelly, SEP
Location: Online Webinar
Details

Somatic Experiencing is a highly effective method for working with trauma. In the safety of an exclusively BIPOC environment, this workshop introduces SE and especially focuses on the practitioner’s own self. How can SE support the inevitable arising of our own histories in the face of the pain we are called to witness? How can our own self-regulation benefit those we support with their healing from trauma? How do we use the SE framework in working with individuals and groups? We will additionally discuss the unique challenges facing BIPOC students in the SE training.

This training is being offered at 3-tiered levels for students to pay what they are able to

Tier 1: $50
Tier 2:$100
Tier 3: $175
