The frequent bidirectional relationship between trauma and functional neurological disorders (FND): Everything that therapists and medical professionals should know

Date: January 25, 2022 | 11:00 am-1:00 pm, MT
Presenter: Yadira Velazquez, MD
Location: Online Webinar
Details

In this webinar you will learn:

Understanding Trauma & Stress: Without understanding trauma, we are more likely to adopt behaviors and beliefs that are negative and unhealthy. However, when we understand trauma and stress we can act compassionately and take well- informed steps toward wellness.

Compassion & Dependability: Trauma is overwhelming and can leave us feeling isolated or betrayed, which may make it difficult to trust others and receive support. However, when we experience compassionate and dependable relationships, we reestablish trusting connections with others that foster mutual wellness.

Collaboration & Empowerment: Trauma involves a loss of power and control that makes us feel helpless. However, when we are prepared for and given real opportunities to make choices for ourselves and our care, we feel empowered and can promote our own wellness.

To analyze the differences and implications of the terms hysteria, psychosomatic, psychogenic, somatic symptom disorder, and functional neurological disorders (FND).

To review the epidemiology, risk factors and health care costs of somatic symptom disorder and FND.

To understand the etiological models involved in the co-existence of somatic, emotional and mental symptoms, such as: top-down mechanisms (psychological model and the role of the limbic system), bottom-up pathways with origin in physical injury, the role of stressors, childhood trauma and epigenetics, defense mechanisms, neurobiological models, hypnosis, cognitive and learning theories.

To discuss the importance of collaboration between therapists and medical professionals.

To review research opportunities in these fields.

To determine how we can provide comprehensive care to our clients. To recognize the somatic manifestations of trauma, mental and emotional disorders.

To detect how somatic injury and trauma can lead to psychological illnesses.

Hidden Mental Health Professionals: Educators & Teachers

Date: February 11, 2022 | 12pm - 1:30pm MST
Presenter: Hosted by: Amie Leigh
Location: Online Event
Details

Educators are tasked with the responsibility of teaching- children and adults- but time and circumstances have revealed that in many ways these professionals are responsible for much more. They have been tasked with guiding students and shaping their personalities, helping them endure through stressors, and providing early identification of mental health issues. Often, teachers are the first people to identify certain behavioral concerns and mental health concerns, and connect students and families to additional school and community services, including mental health providers or social workers. Further, teachers are even sought out as the first source of support for students, acting as an unofficial counselor. In many ways, the current COVID-19 pandemic has compounded these issues, with many teachers reporting higher rates of burnout due to increased stress placed on them, as well as higher levels of student and family distress.

While teachers take on these responsibilities, many have said that traditional training for educators does not adequately prepare them for these additional duties.

In this month's conversation we will explore this impact on teachers, considering ways mental health professionals can support educators, methods for peers to support each other, and provide access to tools to minimize and avoid burnout.

SE and the Nerdverse Sandtray: A 3-Part Webinar Series

Date: February 4, 11, 18, 2022 | 10am - 11am MST each day
Presenter: Burt Rogers LPC, SEP
Additional Presenter: and Thayer Case LCSW, SEP
Location: Online Webinar
Details

Is the story of Batman a story of trauma or resilience?

Is there a difference?

And how does Somatic Experiencing address this question?

According to SEPs Burt Rogers and Thayer Kyusan Case we can turn to the “nerdverse”—anime, comics, video games, sci-fi, fantasy, horror—for answers. They’ve found that the nerdverse can be a collective sandtray: a creative, playful and titrated way that one can search and understand ourselves and others and our collective/individual nervous system(s).

So, how do we catalyze healing by relating to the complex identity and childhood trauma of Killmonger? How can we magically identify and empower the elven, orc and supervillain parts of ourselves? What’s it like to relate to aggression by feeling the power or being the X-men mutant Storm?

In this webinar series, participants will learn ways to use the nerdverse as a conduit for connection, healing and trauma/SE education.

Learn more about this Burt and Thayer and register below!

“When we return to the body, we return to the wider body of the earth, we experience belonging and this returns us to community” – Gemma Mallol SEP

These are experiential sessions where you will be led, invited, guided into a somatic experience of the body in relation to specific elements. This is a 5 element cycle for 5 consecutive weeks. Each week we will work with a different element Earth, Water, Rock, Fire, Space.

- Cultivating basic orienting and grounding techniques in the body

- Integrating SIBAM in a guided somatic journey. The somatic exploration with each element will integrate SIBAM tracking sensation, breathing techniques, sounding, movement, affect, posture, the imaginal and meaning making (SIBAM) in a healing, therapeutic and creative process that is highly attuned to and works with the natural world.

- Cultivating inner resource. These sessions will cultivate deep wells of inner resources and nervous system regulation. This work aligns closely with nature with an awareness and knowledge that nature is often experienced as a universal resource by many people.

- Understanding how to integrate and work with the embodied imaginal with nature.

- By working with the elements directly in an embodied imaginal experience we can benefit from their ancestral wisdom and balancing properties.

- These sessions encourage a cultivation of an intuitive somatic movement practice that has the capacity to reveal innate intelligent healing movement that has its source in our evolutionary and developmental biology

- This process unlocks creative energy. These sessions are creative in their exploration and as such access many different layers of our experience often giving us access to otherwise untapped creative energy

- Body positivity. This work builds a contemplative relationship with your body that is liberating and positively reframes what we think and feel about our bodies. There are many ways to explore this practice from sitting in a chair, to a meditative posture, to moving, to dancing, to yoga- Liberates artistic expression. Once we start to trust our bodies and we can hear, tune into and move with our internal experience more and more we then have established the ground where an inner alchemical process can start to happen that transforms and renegotiates traumatic energies into creative spiritual energy

- Repositions and restores our embodied relationship with nature where we develop access to an intimate, harmonious, sensate alive, embodied, creative and psychodynamic relationship.

- This work connects us intimately with the landscapes that we inhabit, reclaiming our right to belong here. We may start to experience belonging.

- When we feel that we belong, here in our bodies, on our land, and with the elements as our guides we naturally turn towards community and the people who share our environment with us. This work builds community from a foundation of embodying nature.

- When we experience belonging and meaningful connection to the earth that we inhabit, we often develop the capacity to be able to uncover, reveal, unearth our ancestry. The elements guide us back to our ancestral lineages, they return us home, to lying down– it is accessible to everyone that has a body, not matter what shape, colour, size, gender, ability or disability. All you need is a body and a curiosity to find out what is inside! The elements are our supports and our guides.

Gemma invites participants to bring: paper, journal, pen or colouring pencils, along with cushions, blankets and props to make your body as comfortable and supported as possible.
