Basic Principles of Somatic Experiencing® for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous & People of Color)

Date: September 18 - 19, 2021 | 10am - 4pm Central time
Presenter: Francine Kelly, SEP
Location: Online Webinar
Details

This workshop is full and registration for this event is now closed. For other Basic Principles of SE workshops, search "introductory" on this page.

Somatic Experiencing is a highly effective method for working with trauma. In the safety of an exclusively BIPOC environment, this workshop introduces SE and especially focuses on the practitioner’s own self. How can SE support the inevitable arising of our own histories in the face of the pain we are called to witness? How can our own self-regulation benefit those we support with their healing from trauma? How do we use the SE framework in working with individuals and groups? We will additionally discuss the unique challenges facing BIPOC students in the SE training.

This training is being offered at 3-tiered levels for students to pay what they are able to

Tier 1: $50
Tier 2:$100
Tier 3: $175

The Tuning Board and SE™

Date: October 1, 2021 | 11am - 12:30pm Mountain
Presenter: Darrell Sanchez, PhD, SEP, LPC, Certified Craniosacral Therapist, Certified Advanced Rolfer®
Location: Online Webinar
Details

In this webinar, participants will learn:

* The basic concepts, benefits, and uses of the Tuning Board;
* How to use the Tuning Board themselves, so they can embody and understand the sense of flow and vertical integration in their own bodies before using it with a client;
* How to start working with a client on the Tuning Board. This includes the basics of...
- evaluating whether a client can stand on the Tuning Board, or should begin by sitting;
- preparing a client to stand on the Tuning Board;
- assisting a client to stand on the Tuning Board in a way that increases embodiment, vertical integration and resourcing;
- kinesthetically attuning to the client while supporting them on the Tuning Board; and
- helping the client come off the Tuning Board in a way that promotes integration of the experience, including an experiential understanding of grounding.
* How to use the Tuning Board to help clients develop functional orienting capacity (maintaining internal body awareness and groundedness, while being fully present, orienting to, and perceiving their environment -- an essential capacity that is integral to our sense of self and our ability to evaluate and respond to safety or threat in our environment).

Myths & Faulty Beliefs about the Standard of Care in Psychotherapy

Presenter: Dr. Ofer Zur, Ph.D.
Location: Online Webinar
Details

Some of the myths and faulty believes about the standard of care and ethics of psychotherapy that will be explored are:

Touch in therapy is unethical. Non sexual touch is the first step towards sexual touch
Once a client, always a client: Therapists' overwhelming power over clients in perpetuity
All dual relationships are unethical and lead to exploitation
The 'Slippery Slope' (paranoid) myth: Boundary crossings, inevitably, lead to boundary violations
Don’t (never) blame the victim - All victims are always 100% innocent
The DSM is a scientifically valid, and reliable document.

There will be a time for audience participation and questions for the presenter after the presentation of each myth.

How To Support Embodied Connection with Nature

Date: October 14, 2021 | 10am - 12pm Mountain
Presenter: Andrea Bell, LCSW, SEP, California Naturalist
Location: Online Webinar
Details

Human evolution and development have always occurred in the context of, and in deep connection with, the natural world. Every bit of our physical bodies is a gift from Earth’s complex molecular cycles: carbon, water, rocks, plants, etc. In this way, every cell in our bodies is fundamentally connected to earthy life cycles of growth and decay. Our primal bodies know this; our inherent interest and delight in life and nature is called “biophilia”. This is why nature and animals are among our SE clients’ most common and most deeply regulating resources. Less obviously, even the raw materials we use for our “artificial” building and manufacturing, must be taken from our beautiful and complex planet.

However, modern humankind finds itself increasingly disconnected and isolated from the natural world. Experiencing oneself as a small part of Nature’s larger magnificence is our birthright; to find oneself cut off from this feeling is a very recent development. Such isolation from the natural world is a major and largely unrecognized driver of mood disorders. This disconnection from the greater-than-human world, also drives humanity’s destruction of Earth’s life support systems. The impacts of increasing deforestation, destruction of biodiversity, animal extinctions, global climate change, food and water scarcity, and similar effects, show up in our clinical rooms as ecologically based dysphoria (“eco-anxiety”, “green rage”, etc.) Such distress also feeds into other systems of traumatic overcoupling. In short, many people are disconnected from the natural world and terrified for our individual and collective futures.

This online workshop offers a reintroduction to how to help oneself and others increase their experience of embodied nature connection. Because nature connection is such a powerful regulator for most humans, and because everything on this planet is so deeply interconnected, these practices often have positive impacts in a “ripple effect” across multiple levels. Included in the workshop is a focus on self-care for the clinician.

Learning Objectives

1. Name three reasons why it’s vital for SEPs to know how support connection with the natural world.

2. What is a land and inclusivity statement, and why is it important?

3. Describe two ways to help support a client’s regulation by engaging with nature items.

4. Name three assessment questions you could ask, to help you learn about a client’s connection with the natural world.

5. Briefly describe a guided nature based visualization you might use to help a client downregulate SNS charge.

6. How do you experience connection with the web of life? How does this experience effect you?

SE meets Humanual – How Trauma affects Support, Suspension, and Breath: 2 Day Workshop

Date: November 5 & 6, 2021 | 10am - 1pm Mountain each day
Presenter: Betsy Polatin, MFA, SEP, AmSAT
Location: Online Workshop
Details

This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to discover the unity of body, mind, and spirit as you explore the relationship of movement and breath to trauma. I will offer simple exercises to enhance sensory skills by exploring the musculoskeletal, respiratory, and nervous systems, and how they relate to the larger universe, based on the tensegrity model. You will learn to increase body awareness, and breathing capacity, to change inefficient habits, so that you can move with ease and speak with confidence. Learn to awaken inherent potential by finding the support from the ground that can lead to full stature and expansion, while noting how trauma and overwhelm can interfere with this process.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Participant will be able to:

1. Recognize a lack of support in themselves and their clients.

2. Teach their clients how to resource and orient while connected to universal forces.

3. Find a balanced stance in themselves.

4. Explain the coordination of breathing.

So often I have students reporting that they "can't do SE" because their clients don’t want to feel their bodies. So they give up trying. This is very unecessary! This program will provide a number of handy tips of how to achieve “buy in” with the most resistant client. You will learn:

• How to establish clear therapeutic goals that give you the consent you need to enter into body exploration
• Learn a variety of experiential techniques to help make the body a place clients willingly go
• How to ask beautiful, titrated questions when you encounter ”push back”
• How to customize a “body access menu" that does not include nor require sensations
