Description

Healing the Collective Nervous System: SE(R) for Peace A New Paradigm Our premise is that trauma and unmet universal basic needs are at the root of violent conflicts. Successful conflict resolution and the diminishing of violence will require collective trauma healing. The interaction between violent conflicts, trauma and the perpetuation of victimization is clear to us today. Trauma causes violence, and in turn, violence perpetuates trauma, which perpetuates victimization. Because it impairs successful communication and healthy ways of meeting basic needs, trauma negatively impacts relationships, fuels violent conflicts and often makes them intractable. Unresolved conflict also perpetuates trauma and creates more victimization. The last two decades of conflict resolution efforts have shown that conflicts do not resolve without addressing the emotional dimension. Most conflict resolution systems/methods have understood this need but do not know what to do about it. Our contribution is to have been able to create a model that addresses this need directly. The decade of research on the brain gave us hope. It established that the brain is plastic, and we can repair old neuropathways and create new ones. Our better understanding of how the brain is impacted by trauma has guided healing interventions that can be put at the service of peace. We can diminish or stop conflict and violence by healing trauma at the collective level, changing our relationship to justice versus revenge, and to forgiveness versus hatred. Our visionary world view proposes that we learn to look at the world through the lenses of the trauma and healing vortex, focusing on what is working, where the strengths and resources are in one’s personal, communal and collective life, while also using the available tools to heal trauma. By implementing a more structured approach to collective healing and conflict resolution, we can harness the power of the ten social sectors that we have identified that can heal or exacerbate trauma, or both. Our workshop covers four breakthroughs in the field of trauma that make the idea of healing the collective nervous system more possible and are the basis for our model. These breakthroughs, combined with our conflict resolution principles and universal needs, create a unique opportunity to take SE® to the collective level. Our Model for a Framework for Diminishing Violence and Developing Harmony between Nations can help us diminish violence and create an emotional framework favorable for peace in the world.
