Somatic Experiencing Informed Trauma Research: The Evidence to Date – Dr. Chris Walling, PsyD, MBA, C-IAYT, SEP

Description

The last nearly three decades of trauma research have demonstrated a clear relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder and autonomic dysregulation, this finding has generated clinical innovations that now seek to incorporate a more somatic approach to address the systemic effects of traumatic stress, such bodily based methods focus on both the physiological and psychological effects of traumatic experience in treatment (Fisher, 2019). In a recent survey of somatic psychotherapists world-wide conducted at the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium at the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, the most popular method clinicians reported incorporating in their trauma treatment was Somatic Experiencing (SE) (Kinsey Institute, 2021 ). SE has many unique features compared to cognitive based trauma therapies given that its major interventional strategy involves bottom-up processing by directing the patient’s attention to internal sensations, both visceral (interoception) and musculoskeletal (proprioception and kinesthesis), rather than primarily cognitive or emotional experiences (Payne et al., 2015). According to the Somatic Experiencing Institute over twelve thousand mental health professionals and bodyworkers have attended SE Professional Trainings around the world since they began in the United States in 1989 (Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute, 2021 ). This webinar will outline the emerging evidence base of Somatic Experiencing informed trauma research.
