Responding to Hurricane Ida

“It’s devastating there.”

Amie Leigh, Director of Public Health Initiatives for SEI, recently worked with a group of disaster response organizations in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Ida in south Louisiana. Ida caused immense tragedy and destruction from Louisiana all the way up through New England. During this time of a lengthy and worldwide pandemic, multiple natural disasters, and areas of extreme social and political unrest, many of us wonder what we can do to support or relieve distress. SEI is actively in the process of creating crisis stabilization programs and other ways to support disasters utilizing the expertise and compassionate involvement of SEPs.  In a future issue of SE Today, we’ll share more about Amie’s time on the ground and the organizations involved in disaster relief after Ida.

The Proactive Twelve Steps: A Mindful Program for Lasting Change

By Serge Prengel, LMHC, SEP

The Proactive Twelve Steps, by Serge Prengel, LMHC, SEP

“The Proactive Twelve Steps outlines how you can take a proactive approach to life, gradually stepping up from feeling stuck and powerless to enjoying a balanced and happy life. They are a new take on the original Twelve Steps. They describe the steps as a mindful program instead of a mystical experience in which change somehow happens to you.

This book reflects a deep understanding of behavior change, codependency, stress, and trauma. It presents a clear roadmap for self-compassion and mindful self-discovery. It provides specific step-by-step instructions and a broader context that helps readers make sense of the healing process.”

Transgender and LGBTQIA+ Mental Health

Inside Mental Health Podcast with David Cato, LCSW, TCT, SEP

“Gender affirming care can mean something as simple as having gender neutral bathrooms. It can mean having additional support or knowledge around people who are LGBTQIA+. It’s about having a team or staff members who can be able to use the correct pronouns for someone who identifies as something other than the gender they appear to be. For example, if somebody is non binary, they might use pronouns like they/them or somebody who might be transgender, who is beginning a transition process, and we want to avoid the gendering piece.”

CONVERSATIONS

SE Community Conversations

October 8, 2021

12:00 – 1:30 PM

Rural communities experience unique challenges when it comes to mental health on both the individual and community levels. At the same time, rural communities are incredibly hard working, resilient, and well connected. Despite their complexity, rural communities are often excluded from traditional conversations on mental health. In this special session,  practitioners who live and work in these communities share their experience. This event is FREE to attend.

In every SE Conversation series, you can count on lively discussion, tips and tools, and group exercises. The insights and perspectives on this topic of mental health for medical professionals, the challenges, opportunities, and specific issues prevalent to this field all promise to be more worthwhile than ever, worldwide.
